In the UK, planning permission is generally not required for installing solar batteries at your home if the installation meets specific criteria. Typically, solar battery systems fall under “permitted development” rights, meaning you can proceed without formal planning permission.
However, there are exceptions to consider.
If your property is a listed building, located in a conservation area, or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), you might need planning permission. Additionally, if the battery system involves significant alterations to the building’s structure or appearance, it’s wise to check with your local planning authority.
It’s also essential to comply with building regulations and ensure the installation is performed by a certified professional.
Consulting Green Eco Group about local regulations can provide peace of mind and help navigate any potential planning requirements.
Always verify with your local council to ensure compliance with all relevant rules and regulations.
In the UK, installing solar batteries at a business generally does not require planning permission if the installation falls under “permitted development” rights.
However, there are important considerations to ensure compliance with local regulations:
Building Type: If your business operates from a listed building, or if the property is located in a conservation area or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), planning permission may be required.
Installation Scale: Large-scale installations or those that significantly alter the building’s appearance may require planning permission.
Local Authority Regulations: Always check with your local planning authority as regulations can vary. They can provide guidance on specific requirements and ensure your installation complies with local rules.
Building Regulations: Ensure that the installation complies with all applicable building regulations and standards. Using a certified installer is crucial for meeting safety and regulatory requirements.
Contact Green Eco Group for clarity and help navigate any necessary permissions for your business’s solar battery installation.
The optimal location for installing solar batteries depends on several factors, including safety, accessibility, environmental conditions, and efficiency.
Here are some key considerations:
1. Indoor Installation
Temperature Control: Solar batteries perform best in stable, moderate temperatures. A basement, utility room, or garage often provides a controlled environment that is less subject to temperature extremes.
Ventilation: Ensure the location is well-ventilated to prevent overheating and to disperse any potential gas emissions, especially with certain types of batteries like lead-acid.
Accessibility: Choose a location that allows easy access for maintenance, monitoring, and potential repairs.
2. Outdoor Installation
Weather Protection: If installed outdoors, the batteries should be housed in weatherproof enclosures to protect them from rain, snow, and direct sunlight. Enclosures should also offer ventilation to manage heat.
Shaded Area: Place the batteries in a shaded area to avoid direct exposure to sunlight, which can lead to overheating and reduced efficiency.
3. Proximity to Inverter and Solar Panels
Short Distance: Install the batteries close to the inverter and solar panels to minimize energy loss and increase efficiency. This setup reduces the length of wiring needed and thus decreases resistance and power loss.
4. Safety Considerations
Fire Safety: Avoid installing batteries near flammable materials. Ensure the location complies with fire safety regulations and guidelines.
Flood Risk: Avoid basements or areas prone to flooding to protect the batteries from water damage.
By considering these factors, you can choose the best location for your solar battery installation, maximising efficiency, safety, and longevity.
The lifespan of solar batteries varies depending on the type of battery, usage patterns, maintenance, and environmental conditions.
Here are the typical lifespans for the most common types of solar batteries:
Lithium-ion Batteries:
- Lifespan: 10-15 years
- Advantages: High efficiency, longer cycle life, better performance in various temperatures, and low maintenance.
- Common Usage: Residential and commercial solar energy systems.
Lead-Acid Batteries:
Lifespan: 5-10 years
- Advantages: Lower initial cost, established technology.
- Common Usage: Off-grid solar systems, backup power applications.
- Types: Flooded lead-acid (FLA) and sealed lead-acid (SLA), with SLA generally requiring less maintenance.
Nickel-based Batteries:
- Lifespan: 10-20 years
- Advantages: Durable, reliable, and good performance at extreme temperatures.
- Common Usage: Industrial applications, niche markets.
Flow Batteries:
- Lifespan: 10-20 years
- Advantages: Long cycle life, scalability, and good for large-scale energy storage.
- Common Usage: Utility-scale energy storage, large commercial systems.
Factors Influencing Lifespan:
- Depth of Discharge (DoD): Frequently discharging a battery to low levels can shorten its lifespan. Maintaining a higher average charge level generally increases longevity.
- Cycle Life: The number of charge and discharge cycles a battery can handle before its capacity significantly degrades. Lithium-ion batteries typically have a higher cycle life compared to lead-acid batteries.
- Temperature: Extreme temperatures can affect battery performance and longevity. Keeping batteries in a controlled environment can extend their lifespan.
- Maintenance: Regular maintenance, especially for lead-acid batteries, can help prolong their lifespan. Lithium-ion batteries require less maintenance.
Overall, with proper usage and maintenance, solar batteries can provide reliable energy storage for many years, making them a valuable component of solar energy systems.

I don't often write reviews but I can honestly say GreenEco have been exceptional from start to finish. I went to a number of companies for quotes and did a fair bit of due diligence before selecting GreenEco - particularly as their quote came in quite a bit lower than others. In these early days, Tarren and his team were always available to answer my queries, provide updated quotes and meet my needs. I ended up with an 8 panel 3.8kW Aiko system, Sigenstor 6kW inverter and 10kWh battery with a view to future ASHP running. Malcolm came out and surveyed - very knowledgeable and structural information was all checked in accordance with MCS requirements. Lucy took over communications and kept me in the loop on all proceedings - a bit of a wait while I awaited an LDC from Lewisham (my choice and arrangement) - but they were ready to install as soon as it came through. Scaffold up in advance and the installation team did all the work in one day. Clean, tidy and friendly and good handover of Sigenstor App and instructions. I'm now exporting and running the house on zero electrical imports - long live the Summer! Thanks GreenEco...highly recommended.

I recently had solar PV installed and I’ve been really happy with the whole experience. From the quotation process through to the installation itself, everything was handled well and the process felt straightforward. The team were friendly, helpful and easy to deal with throughout. They explained everything clearly without overcomplicating it, answered any questions I had, and kept me updated along the way. I never felt under pressure, which made a big difference when making the decision. Aaron was amazing and super helpful with all my questions and patient with my indecisiveness! Installation day went smoothly. They arrived when they said they would, got on with the job, and left everything tidy afterwards. The standard of work looks really good. Since having the system installed, everything has been working well and I’m really pleased I went ahead with it. Overall, a very positive experience and I’d definitely recommend Green Eco Group to anyone thinking about getting solar PV installed in the future.

Can I say I had a number of quotes and after reading such good reviews I decided to go with Green Eco Group. The team were very helpful and Tarren especially was incredibly helpful from the order stage right through to some small niggles after install, which I may say was not down to him. All sorted out in very short order. The 2 installers worked there socks of and completed the install in a day. All very neat and tidy work. I was well impressed and would certainly recommend this company.![]()

I had a genuinely excellent experience with Green Eco Group from start to finish. My research brought me to Fogstar (the UK battery manufacturer) and they referred me to Green Eco Group. That recommendation alone gave me confidence I was dealing with people who know the industry properly. From install day through to final setup, everything was smooth and well organised — no drama, no chasing and no cold calling after the initial meeting. What really stood out was how they handled all the certifications, paperwork, insurance guarantees, no upfront costs. It was all taken care of step by step, which makes a huge difference when you’re investing in a system like this. Even post-install, the owners are at the end of the phone if you need anything. They’ll log in, monitor the system and talk you through any questions without hesitation. That level of aftercare is rare. Professional, knowledgeable and genuinely supportive throughout.
